A cross on an old map and an old poem were the only clues to show that there was once an important medieval manor house right in the centre of Widecombe. Unperturbed local historians and enthusiastic volunteers rose to the challenge to locate and discover more about this medieval mystery.

This new booklet from Widecombe History Group covers the fascinating story of what’s happened over the last 20 years and of those who taken part. Working together with archaeologists and specialists they have revealed a tantalizing glimpse of an impressive moated manor house.

The booklet brings to life some of their research with photographs of the pottery and the excavations, and is illustrated with detailed reconstruction drawings of what medieval Widecombe would have looked like.

The archaeologist's detailed report will be available shortly from www.dartmoorstory.org
