This photograph of Evelyn Anthony Cave Penney shows him in the uniform of the Queen Victoria's Own Corps of Guides (Frontier Force) (Lumsdens). It was considered an "elite" regiment within the Indian Army.
Evelyn was born on 13th November 1898 in Exeter, his father Frank Cave Penney. His mother Amelia Hine. Evelyn had an elder sister Joan born in 1896, a younger sister Marjorie born in 1900, and two younger brothers Frank born in 1904 and Roy born in 1906. Evelyn's father Frank died in 1907. Upon his eighteenth birthday in November 1916 he was commissioned into the Indian Army and was posted to “Lumsdens” Frontier Force. The regiment served on the North West Frontier of India until November 1917. In November 1917 the Regiment was posted to Mesopotamia where they became part of the 11th Indian Cavalry Brigade. It was at this time that Evelyn was promoted to Lieutenant.
As the war continued into 1918 some of the Indian Cavalry regiments were "dismounted" and performed as infantry soldiers, to assist the Allied infantry in the continuous battles with Turkish troops. In June 1918 Evelyn's Regiment was serving in reserve trenches situated north-east of Jerusalem, when they were ordered forward to reinforce troops in a fire fight with Turkish forces. As his men entered the front-line trench Evelyn Anthony Cave Penney was shot dead by a sniper.
Evelyn Anthony Cave Penney is commemorated in Ramleh Military Cemetery in Israel and on the War Memorial in St John's Parish Church in the village of Leusdon in Devon. The most striking memorial to Evelyn is located, 1300ft above sea level at Sherwell Cross on Dartmoor. The Cave Penny memorial stands approximately one mile from the then family home in Sherwell.
