As the war continued into 1918 some of the Indian Cavalry regiments were "dismounted" and performed as infantry soldiers, to assist the Allied infantry in the continuous battles with Turkish troops. In June 1918 Evelyn's Regiment was serving in reserve trenches situated north-east of Jerusalem, when they were ordered forward to reinforce troops in a fire fight with Turkish forces. As his men entered the front-line trench Evelyn Anthony Cave Penney was shot dead by a sniper.

Evelyn Anthony Cave Penney is commemorated in Ramleh Military Cemetery in Israel and on the War Memorial in St John's Parish Church in the village of Leusdon in Devon. The most striking memorial to Evelyn is located, 1300ft above sea level at Sherwell Cross on Dartmoor. The Cave Penny memorial stands approximately one mile from the then family home in Sherwell.
