October talk PROJECT DONN
The talk by Abi Gray, from Devon Rural Archives, was an insight into the 1765 Map of Devon written by Benjamin Donn. Donn 1729 -1798 was a cartographer, surveyor and mathematician who created a map for £100. The map was of unique Country Houses, Manor houses and Gentry seats, the owners of which would have subscribed to have their property placed on the map.
Abi went on to speak of Manor houses mentioned on the Map. Shilstone Manor, where the DRA is situated today, is mentioned at that time and was owned by a John Savery who subscribed. Norraway Manor, Powderham Castle, Knightstone, Fowlscombe, Crealy Barton and Painsford all show evidence of being on the map and Abi gave a potted history of each in turn highlighting special features from each one. To include gardens, landscapes, water features, ponds, canals and streams and much architecture, pottery and of course many documents and old pictures.
