Meeting of the Widecombe History Group was held at The Church House,                                 Widecombe, on Wednesday, 5th October at 7.30pm
Terry French was in the Chair. There were 40 members present.
Apologies:  Patrick Garvey, Mary Pascoe, Sid & Jo Pontin, Lyn & Derek Hext, Val Watson, Arthur Wrayford.
The Minutes of the meeting in September 2016 had been circulated. There was one amendment about the post box at Natsworthy.  It has been removed, although not confirmed as stolen.  It was agreed that the minutes should then be signed.
Matters Arising
Widecombe Fair went very well with many visitors to the Heritage Tent.  Sue Boustead thanked everyone for the donations of jars, which raised £179.  Thanks were expressed to Aileen and Peter Carrett for all their hard work putting the displays together, and also to Rodney Cruze for all the equipment and agricultural implements in the bottom field.  The Census books, which were missing, have been returned.
History Group Events
At short notice, a meeting was convened at the North Hall site for a visit by Robert Waterhouse, Archaeologist.  Robert first suggested that North Hall might be worth investigating and he wanted to see what had been found. 
Final arrangements were made for the walk around Tavistock on Saturday, 8th October.  The coach will leave Widecombe at 9.30am. Meet at 2.00pm at the Archway by the Museum.
The visit to Moretonhampstead, led by Bill Hardiman, on Wednesday, 28th September, was very interesting.  There was a talk, a visit to the church and a walk around Moretonhampstead, followed by a meal at the Union Inn. 
Final orders were taken for the second History Group Lunch on Wednesday, 26th October.  12.30pm for 1.00pm.
Marcia Babington distributed leaflets about a visit to Lewtrenchard Manor on Wednesday 24th May 2017.  This is an all day visit and will include a tour of the Church, The Forgotten Garden and the Holy Well.  An optional lunch will be available from the Manor Hotel. The cost excluding the lunch is £21.50, with a maximum of 20 people.
World War I
There is an event at Buckland Community Hall on Friday, 28th October, concerning World War I.  Peter Rennells, David Ashman and John Kimber have put together a display.  It starts at 6.30pm and funds raised will go the British Legion.
History As It Happens
Ashburton Hospital and others are threatened with closure.  There is a Consultation Meeting at Widecombe Church Hall on Wednesday, 12th October, at 6.30pm.
Poles and antenna have been installed for the new superfast broadband.
There is some filming happening at Tunhill.
Terry’s Teaser
  “Where is Vinny Ford?” Vinny Ford is on the Wallabrook between Sherril and Riddon, adjoining Spitchwick and Riddon Ridge.
Next month’s teaser is “Where is Northway Bridge?”
An email had been received asking where the chapel at Foggintor Quarry had been situated. It was by the cottages.
A second email from Devon Remembers announced a meeting on 17th October, 10am – 5.00pm at the Devon Heritage Centre.
Any Other Business
There is a change of date for the Leusdon Coffee Morning.  Instead of the usual December date, the big Christmas Fair will be on Wednesday 30th November.  The one on the first Wednesday of November will be held as usual on 2nd November. 
Project Time
Roger Claxton presented several short films which included Ordnance Survey maps of Widecombe parish,1802 &1803 from the British Library. Film from Rural West Country Idll 1968 of  A Dartmoor Postman around  Postbridge, Widecombe Fair 1947 and Devon Villages -  Buckland, Widecombe and  Lustleigh

Tuesday, 1st November.  Princetown History Group.  Weather Forecasting by Will Hand.
Wednesday, 2nd November.  Coffee Morning at Leusdon Memorial Hall.  10.00-12.00.
Wednesday, 2nd November.  Widecombe History Group. Nick Powe – Stepping out of the Stone Age.
Wednesday, 30th November.  Grand Christmas Coffee Morning at Leusdon Memorial Hall.  10.00-12.00.
Wednesday, 24th May 2017.  Visit to Lewtrenchard Manor.  All day by coach.
