Meeting of the Widecombe History Group was held at The Church House, Widecombe, on Wednesday, 2nd March 2016 at 7.30pm
Terry French was in the Chair. There were 39 members and one guest present.
Anthony Beard, Founder Member of the History Group and Secretary, passed away on 30th January 2016.  It was Anthony who first suggested that a History Group should be formed in Widecombe and he had been the leading light for all the years until his death.  His personality and enthusiasm will long be remembered.  A great loss to the History Group.  Our Chairman, Terry French, asked the members to stand for a two minute silence in his memory.  The History Group will be carrying on in his memory and Terry said that the Committee would need help to keep the group going.
A letter had been received from Moretonhampstead History Society sending sincere condolences and recognising Anthony’s enormous contribution to their Group.
The Group heard that Peter Rennells had been poorly and best wishes were sent to him for his quick recovery.
Wendy and Rodney Cruze are celebrating their Golden Wedding Anniversary. Congratulations.
A Memorial Service in memory of Freda Wilkinson was held on 1st March at Leusdon Church.  Freda passed away in December and was also a Founder Member of the History Group.
Apologies:  Wendy Beard, Pat Watson, Paula Stevens, Patrick Garvey, Ruth Parnell, Ann Murphy, Kirsty & Alan Peake, Laraine Ashman, Rosemary Mortimore, Arthur Wrayford & Peter Rennells.
The Minutes of the January meeting had been circulated and it was agreed that they should be signed.
Margaret Phipps asked for a volunteer to write a precis of the talk each month to add to the minutes.  Joanna Radford kindly offered to help.
History Group Lunch
Peter Carrett said there were still places available for the History Group Lunch. This will be held on Wednesday, 16th March, at Stover Golf Club. 12.30 for 1.00pm.  Three courses for £15 or two courses for £11.50. These prices do not include tips.
Visit to Britannia Naval College
Marcia distributed forms for the trip to the Britannia Naval College on Saturday, 23rd April.  She will need them back by the next meeting in April at the latest.
Japanese Tea Party
Miho organised a very successful Japanese Tea Party at Dunstone Chapel on Wednesday, 17th February.  Proceeds, totalling £105 were donated to Dunstone Chapel.
History As It Happens
There are problems again with the Church clock.  In Geoffrey Fenton’s words, “time is standing still”.  The 2015/16 winter has been described as the warmest and wettest winter on record.  Repairs are being carried out to Holne Bridge.  It was originally damaged when a tree came down and then the scaffolding was swept away by floods into the other end of the bridge where it did more damage.  Newbridge has been damaged yet again and will need repairing.
Terry’s Teaser
“Where is Wheelbarrow Farm?”  This is another name for Primms Cottage, above Ponsworthy and was named by Terry’s father.  This month’s teaser is “Where is Southcombe Wells”?
Any Other Business
The Annual Parish Meeting will be held on Wednesday, 16th March, at 7.00pm.  There will be a discussion about a possible new Village Hall in Widecombe as well as reports from all the local organisations.  Terry French will give a report on the History Group.
The meeting closed at 9.20pm.
