History As It Happens
There are reports that CCTV cameras are being installed at Newbridge to try to catch the vehicles that are constantly damaging the bridge. The bridge is badly damaged at present and will be closed for three days, 14th-16th December, for repairs. During the last month, the UK was hit by storm “Angus” and the Old Inn was flooded.
“Where is Bill Leaman’s Hill?” It is the hill up towards Town Wood Farm on the road between Newbridge and Lower Town.
Terry set two teasers for this month. “What was Lower Town known as before it was called Lower Town?” and “Where is Barren Hill Corner?”
Any Other Business
Peter Carrett reported that John Lowe is going to research another plane crash on Hameldown, that of a Beaufighter on 27th September 1941. John asks if anyone knows the site of this crash. A suggestion was made that the Air Ministry would have a map reference.
The Widecombe-in-the-Moor Historic Environment Record Map has been hung in the Church House in Widecombe.
