Widecombe History group Minutes
Meeting of the Widecombe History Group was held at The Church House, Widecombe, on Wednesday, 6th May 2015 following the AGM.
Terry French was in the Chair. There were 36 people present of which 2 were visitors.

The Minutes of the meeting held in April 2015 were read and signed.
The date of the second dig a North Hall has been confirmed as 13th-18th July. On 18th July, there is a free open day, 10.30am to 4.30pm. Thanks were expressed to Marcia Babington for organising the walk around Bovey Tracey with Frances Billinge which was well attended. Unfortunately, the two trips organised by Marcia to Great Fulford and Ugbrooke House have had to be cancelled due to lack of support. No reply has been received from the Parish Councils about the Roll of Honour. Rob Steemson had been asking for information about the Poundsgate Pound, it was suggested he contact Patrick Simpson. John Walling and Terry French have sprayed the ground elder at the Pig’s House site. Anthony had written to George Gribble about the Bus Service to Widecombe, asking him to look into the change of day. He suggested that spare places in the school bus could be used by members of the public. Terry French, Peter Rennells and Peter Carrett had taken a walk round Widecombe for the Torbay U3A and a thank you letter had been received. Another guided walk is planned for 25th June. Peter Rennells, Terry and David Ashman will lead this. The painted cloth which hung in the Church while repairs were being carried out, was unrolled, inspected and then replaced in the kitchen area of The Church House. East Dartmoor History Association are running a project between now and September on how life was affected by industrialisation and urban growth; also activities of agricultural life on Dartmoor in the Middle Ages. The results will be given to a conference in October.
History Group Lunch
The Committee floated the idea of having a History Group Lunch. Provisional date Wednesday, 21st October, at Stover Golf Club, three course lunch for £14.
Moor Than Meets the Eye
Geoffrey Fenton needs volunteers to put together information for the new signs to be placed in Widecombe. Terry, Margaret and Anthony volunteered.
A book has been published on Dartmoor Air Crashes, by Robert Jones.
History As It Happens
The Poppy Quilt is completely finished and was displayed in the Hobbycraft store in Newton Abbot. It is imperative now to sell draw tickets. Judy Southcombe was interviewed on Radio 4 and Radio Devon about the changes to the bus service.
Margaret Phipps said that the next Newsletter was programmed for July and asked for contributions.
Last month’s Teaser was “Where is French’s Lane?” Answer – Just above East Shallowford from the road out onto Rowden Ball. This month’s Teaser is “Where is Clay Pits Corner?”

Thursday, 25th June 2.00pm. Guided walk around the village for Chulmleigh Local History Group. Led by Peter Rennells, Terry French and David Ashman.
