Widecombe History group Minutes
Meeting of the Widecombe History Group was held at The Church House, Widecombe, on Wednesday, 1st July 2015 at 7.30pm
Terry French was in the Chair. There were 36 people present of which 2 were visitors.
Apologies: Anthony & Wendy Beard, Audrey & Arch Mortimore, Peter Rennells & Miho, Val & Pat Watson, Joanna Radford, John & Zena Lowe.
The Group were pleased to hear that Anthony Beard is feeling much better. Joanna Radford has been in hospital.
The Minutes of the meeting held in June 2015 were read and signed.
Terry, Peter and David Ashman have led two group walks around Widecombe.
The gate to the Chapel will be repaired soon.
History Group Lunch
The date for the History Group Lunch has been postponed as it was felt the October date was too close to the talk and evening meal to be held at the Union Inn, in Moretonhampstead on Friday, 23rd October.
Geoffrey Fenton gave out details of the walk he is leading to look at flowers and vegetation on the Moor. Monday, 3rd August at 2.00pm. Meet at Ruddycleave.
Mike Wright gave some information on this year’s Peter Hirst walk on Saturday, 29th August at 2.00 p.m.. It will be a shorter walk this year taking in Bonehill and Wind Tor.
On Monday, 13th July, Miho Rennells is holding a musical evening for some guests from Japan and in aid of Devon Air Ambulance and the Tsunami Appeal in Japan. Shared supper.
On Saturday, 11th July, The Ashburton Singers will be performing at Leusdon Church in aid of the Church. Shared supper.
On 31st July, there will be a Cream Tea at Leusdon Memorial Hall to raise funds. 3.00-5.00pm.
World War I Roll of Honour
The draft Roll of Honour is being produced. It has been pointed out that we have two skilled people in the parish for calligraphy and framing who could be asked to help in due course.
A second book has been written by Sam Harris’s daughter, Peggy, entitled “Life on a Dartmoor Scrapyard”. Chris Chapman has produced a DVD on her life which is now available.
History As It Happens
The day of the meeting was the hottest July day since records began. At Heath Row, the temperature reached 36.7 degrees. There are still problems with the Church Clock. The Widecombe Tug ‘O War team came fourth in the national championships. Mark Hutchins completed the 32 mile “ultra marathon” starting in Princetown and taking in Dartmeet, Ashburton, Buckland, Widecombe, Postbridge and ending back at Princetown.
The latest Newsletter (July 2015) has been published by Joanna Radford and Margaret Phipps and was distributed.
North Hall Dig
Volunteers are needed to help with the North Hall Dig. Please let Margaret Phipps or Anthony Beard know if you can help.

Any Other Business
Judy Southcombe had attended two meetings. Moor Than Meets The Eye at Uppacott and the East Dartmoor History Group. The East Dartmoor History Group are working on a project concerning the railways coming to the moor and the beginning of tourism on Dartmoor.
The Two Crosses stone is becoming overgrown with grass and turf which needs clearing.
The Poppy Quilt will be on show at the Church House on 16th July and again on Thursday 13th August. Group members were asked to keep selling tickets as we still need to do so.

Wednesday, 5th August. Coffee Morning at Leusdon Memorial Hall. 10.00am-12.00noon.
Wednesday, 5th August. Widecombe History Group. Talk on ‘Churchill – His Finest Hour’ by Brian Portch.
Saturday, 29th August. The Peter Hirst Memorial Walk, Bonehill and Wind Tor meet at 2.00 p.m.
