This year Widecombe Fair saw the launch of a new book – A Devon Dialect Alphabet
Now you can buy your own copy of this lovely little book.
Joanna Radford, a local artist, put together this unique book inspired by a traditional ABC rhyme that she heard read aloud by Tony Beard - ‘The Wag of Widecombe’. The traditional rhyme is written in the Devon dialect and each letter has been beautifully illustrated using a variety of different printing methods, such as etchings, woodcuts, engravings, lino cuts and so forth. The 26 pictures are all original art works by Joanna and many reflect where she lived in the Parish of Widecombe-in-the-Moor.
A new way to learn your ABC! Try speaking the dialect and laugh at the rhymes and the clever illustrations. This is truly a book to have, cherish and pass down to future generations and one for both young and old to enjoy.
Sadly Joanna Radford is no longer with us. She was a member of the Widecombe History Group (WHG) and she generously left this book to them to benefit their many projects. WHG thanks her family, Parishscapes, and all those who have helped bring this book to publication.
This lovely little hardback book is on sale for £9.50 (excluding postage) with all proceeds going towards Widecombe History Group Projects.
