Dartmoor Expedition CentreRight on the edge of open moorland in the barns and yard of a 400 year old thatched farmhouse. Ancient granite barns have been converted to fully equipped bunkhouses to provide simple accommodation. Since 1972 this has provided an ideal base for families getting together and friends getting away from it all to enjoy some outdoor fun. Regular visitors include Ten Tors Training groups, Duke of Edinburgh Expeditions and Field Studies parties. The friendly atmosphere can be a real asset for residential courses for youngsters and adults alike, making it a positive and memorable experience for a wide range of visitors, from clubs to management courses, schools and youth groups. Walk out of the door onto the ridge of historic Hameldon Beacon, and the Two Moors Way. Explore the banks of the River Dart or take shelter in forests and woodland on windy days. Canoe on the River Dart, only 15 minutes drive, with white water and calmer stretches for beginners, depending on the height of the river. The Exe and sea canoeing are alternatives. Climb at the Dewerstone and Haytor, or go "bouldering" on other small crags nearby. Test you skills on different kinds of rock at Chudleigh and the sea cliffs at Torbay. Cave at Buckfastleigh. There are fascinating networks of caves here, one of which is open to beginners. Bones of sabre tooth tiger and brontosaurus have been found in this area. Pony trekking is an excellent way to get out into the wide open spaces and see the Moor. Several excellent stables offer rides for beginners and more experienced riders. Mountain bike across some of wonderful designated routes over the moor. Bikes can be hired locally if you haven't got your own. Cycle through beautiful country lanes and challenge yourself on Dartmoor's famous hills. Archaeological sites are plentiful and this part of the Moor in particular rich in ancient remains, from Bronze Age stone circles to mediaeval villages abandoned because of plague.
