Union of Benefices

We have now received confirmation from the Church Commissioners that the proposed Pastoral Scheme for the union of the Benefices of Ashburton with Buckland in the Moor and Bickington, and Widecombe-in-the-Moor, Leusdon, Princetown, Postbridge, Huccaby and Holne has been accepted and will come into effect on September 1st 2005.

Practical details as to how the new Team is to operate will take a while to sort out, with particular areas of responsibility yet to be worked out. There are no plans to merge everything, so for the time being both the Moorland and Ashburton groups will maintain their own parish magazines, sharing information where appropriate. We look forward to a gradual growing together as we learn to recognise and cherish each others’ gifts and short-comings!

How to turn water into Blackberry Wine – Curate’s Recipe, by popular request.

Put 4lbs blackberries into a fermenting bucket; dissolve 1.5lbs sugar in 4 pints of boiling water and when cooled to room temperature, add to blackberries. Add wine yeast as per instructions on packet ( Gervin No. 2 Red Label is good, but general purpose wine yeast will do). Mix in well, crushing berries. Cover with lid and leave to ferment for 8 days, stirring each day. Strain out solids using fine muslin or jelly bag, and return to bucket. Add another 1.5lb sugar dissolved in 1 pint water. Leave for another 4 days then siphon into demijohn leaving as much deposit behind as possible. Top up with cooled boiled water to make a gallon. Fit fermentation lock and leave in warm place until fermentation stops. Siphon clear wine into clean demijohn, leaving deposit behind. Fit safety bung. Ready to drink within 6 months. Ideal for harvest suppers!

The Team Evangelist Writes: "PEACE or PIECES...."

As I write this article my thoughts turn to the many celebrations that are being marked this year for the end of hostilities in Europe and Far East sixty years ago. Fortunately I am too young to have experienced the horrors of those particular conflicts, however, with many others, I share a deep sense of gratitude and thankfulness to all those who fought in those conflicts, especially those who gave their lives and those who still suffer as a result.

As we are all no doubt are aware, Peace is a very fragile gift that can be so easily broken. Peace can only truly exist if all parties involved have the common aim of working to keep it. History shows that we do not easily learn from our mistakes. How true is the saying, "the man who forgets history is often forced to relive it?" As I write there are some eighty-five conflicts being fought across the world many involving British service personnel.

Each one of us has a duty to work for peace. If we do not then we dishonour those who gave their lives! The future is in our hands as both Peace and War begin with individuals - people like you and I, whether it be at home, work, school or in Governments. It is in our human behaviour towards each other - our attitudes, responses and reactions that the seeds of Peace and Conflict are sown. Peace has to be nurtured from shattered Pieces! Each of us has the responsibility and the challenge to, "build up the common life", but also pass it on to future generations, that they may grow in the ways of Peace.

Many will know well the Peace that comes at the end of a battle when the cease-fire is sounded and the big guns fall silent. That moment when the "battle" is over and tranquillity is restored. A time when we face the task of repairing the shattered pieces of Peace, making the effort to move on. For many this is often harder than the conflict itself. Remember - If we are not part of the solution then we could he part of the problem.

Yet even today there are many ongoing "personal conflicts" which cause us to worry, fear and anxiety. It is in these situations that we all need to experience that. "Inner Peace" - Peace in our hearts and minds even though the world around us is full of foreboding and uncertainty. It is at times like these that the words of the Resurrected Lord to his disciples bring comfort and hope - "Peace be with you" Words said to men and women who were living in fear for their lives, wondering if the same end that had befallen Jesus on the cross was awaiting them.

Yet with those four simple words they were transformed from Despair to Hope, from Fear to Action. What was it that changed their lives and empowered them to turn the shattered pieces of their lives into A UNITED PEOPLE OF PEACE.

CHRIST’S PEACE WAS IN THEIR HEARTS AND SHOWN IN THEIR LIVES

O God, from whom all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works do proceed; give unto thy servants that peace which the world cannot give; that both, our hearts may be set to obey thy commandments, and also that, by thee, we being defended from the fear of our enemies may pass our time in rest and quietness; through the merits of Jesus Christ our Saviour.

Amen
