Dates for your DiariesEvery Monday Evening in Ashburton Town Hall – Yoga Classes see printed link for more details
Home CommunionIf you are used to receiving communion, but can no longer get to church because of ill-health or loss of mobility and would like to receive communion at home, please contact Rev’d Corynne Cooper (01364 631522) or Capt. David Swales (01822 890603). Lent 2006Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, March 1st. There will be a special service of Holy Communion for the United Benefice at 7.30pm in St Andrew’s Church, Ashburton, which will include the Imposition of Ashes for those who wish to participate. In the Moorland parishes there will also be a Lent Bible Study course running on Friday evenings and Prayer Breakfasts on Saturday mornings. See next month’s Link for full details. Lent Study GroupJesus once asked his disciples what people were saying about him, and then asked them: “And you, who do you say that I am?” This question will form the basis of a study group this year – an opportunity to explore what different people believe about Jesus. Come and see – you might be surprised. There will be two groups meeting at the Vicarage, Holne one on Thursday afternoons from 2.30 – 4.00pm, and one on Friday evenings from 7.30-9.00pm. The first meetings will be on 9th and 10th March and then weekly until 7th April. If you would like to join one of the groups, please contact Corynne on 01364 631522 Confirmation ClassesWe are hoping to run a Confirmation Group this year, possibly based in Postbridge. The date for Confirmations in this area is May 14th so we need to start classes as soon as possible. If you would like to consider Confirmation please contact Corynne 0n 01364 631522. THE TEAM EVANGELIST WRITES:TEACH ME THY WAY, O LORD Over the past few weeks, I have received a variety of prospectuses from both local colleges and universities offering the opportunity to enhance my learning. Some years ago I received one via the Internet which invited me to enrol in a three year degree course in Aboriginal dialects based in Alice Springs - Australia, some 12,000 Miles away. Obviously not a day course and too far - even for me!! As we grow older we are often reminded of how little we know or remember, despite since 1948 spending an average of 144,000 hours in the classroom during our schooldays. Through education and research the human race has achieved much that is to its credit, however it has also learnt the ways of destruction and inhumanity. The writer of Proverbs penned these words, “Teach the wise and they will become more wise” - Proverbs 9.9 Education in the more positive sense of the word brings both knowledge and stimulus to learn more about one’s own interests. This is often enhanced, when it is shared with others who have similar interests if not always the same viewpoint!! In the sharing of our experiences, we cannot only be challenged, but also enriched by the interactions. In this month of March and early April we find ourselves in the season of Lent. This season calls us to examine ourselves by drawing closer to God in penitence for our failings, but also to learn more about his love and the tasks he has given us to do in his name. Traditionally, Lent is seen as a time of abstinence and denial as we remember Jesus in the wilderness preparing for His ministry: However, for many the only denial is that of Lent itself. Lent has also often been likened to a journey, undertaken as a preparation for Holy Week and Easter. At the heart of the early Celtic Christian Tradition was the daily theme of journey and the learning about God on the way. A Celtic monk once told a group of pilgrims travelling to Rome that they would not find God unless they “took him” with them! How true that is, for it is in the experiences of travelling not just in the arrival at the destination that true insight comes. Whether in groups or as individuals let us use this holy season to prepare ourselves for all that God is preparing for us that we may not only learn His will for us, but also demonstrate His purpose to those around us. The task will not be easy but we do not do it in our own strength. As our Father has called us, so make us worthy of that calling. Peace be with you, David Parish Pastoral Contacts
