The Thirteenth Annual General Meeting of The Widecombe History Group was held at The Church House Widecombe on Wednesday 5th May 2010 at 7.30 p.m. Apologies: Barbara Norrish, Joy Routley, Dot Jones, Ruth Parnell, Rodney Cruze, John Kimber, Mike & Mo Wright, and Mary Pascoe. This AGM was held prior to our regular monthly meeting. Roger Claxton was in the chair and 41 members attended. The minutes of the 2009 AGM had been read and signed as correct at the June 2009 meeting. They were formally adopted this evening.
Chairman's report: Roger Claxton said how much he had enjoyed the past twelve months and felt that the group had achieved a lot during the year. He thanked everyone for coming so regularly to the meetings and events, he mentioned the tea/coffee ladies, those that have been involved with organising our trips, events and programme, the committee as a whole and the researchers that are still adding to our knowledge of the district. The librarian, newsletter editor fundraisers and all those that in any way have made this group what it is.
Treasurer's report: Jenny Pascoe reported that our financial situation is very sound. The fundraising events for the 'Heritage Centre Project' have been very successful and she has opened a second account to keep the funds for that project separate from the normal accounts of the group. This will be shown in a separate account next year. The accounts to 28th February 2010 were presented and John Walling proposed and Roger Whale seconded the adoption of the accounts. Carried. They showed a balance of £6,678.19, an excess of £1,762.17 for the year, much of this being for the Heritage Project. Jenny has been treasurer since the group began but this year she has retired, we thank her for all her work in keeping our accounts so accurately, and with such detail.
Secretary's Report: Anthony Beard said that he supported all that Roger had said earlier and the success of the group is down to the continual and never ending support that he and the officers get from all members. He thanked the officers for their assistance during the year and all members for the enthusiasm shown for everything we do and arrange. At last it appears that our 'Constitution' has been approved by H. M. Customs & Excise so we should now be able to claim 'Gift Aid' on donations received. The Heritage Centre idea is still on going. He reported that our original idea of taking over the Reading Room may still come to fruition but the idea of us taking over the full responsibility of the whole yard, buildings and the boundary walls was far too much for a voluntary group like ours to undertake. We are now awaiting response from Widecombe Parochial Church Council to another of our ideas, that is to utilise part of the rear of the church - only time will tell! This year we have achieved the re-erection of the 'D' stone on the church path up from Bowden Lane near Kingshead Corner. It is a boundary stone of Widecombe Town Manor and Jordan "Dewdon" Manor. With the support of D. N. Park we have had the monolith at Two Crosses re-erected as well. The Parochial Church Council have allowed us to put on exhibition in the South Chancel, the mechanical model of 'Uncle Tom Cobley & All'. We have had some excellent speakers, outings and events during the past year and we have an excellent programme lined up for the rest of this year. We have given several guided walks around the village to various groups and those events have helped our funds. After another wonderful day at Widecombe Fair we have been invited to participate again this year on 14th September 2010 and we shall be looking at thatching and associated crafts, and haulage businesses in the parish, and a special tribute to Eden Phillpotts. We have recorded much about education in Widecombe and we will be continuing with North Hall and look forward to another productive year ahead.
