The Reading Room as it is today

The Widecombe Heritage, Community Archive and Educational Centre Project (to give it its full title) is a project initiated by the Widecombe History Group to bring such a facility to Widecombe. Although nothing is definite so far, there is a possibility that the Old Reading Room in Widecombe village centre can be made available for this purpose by the local Diocesan authorities (who own the building).

Considerable building work is involved in bringing the building up to scratch and to make it suitable for the storage of archives, research facilities, exhibition area etc, which will be open to the public on a regular basis. Once open it will provide a permanent base for the storage of the History Group’s considerable archive material, including documents, photographs, books, pictures etc, which will in addition benefit from being digitised (scanned onto computer) for access and security.

The History Group has limited financial resources, so the project, if it is to succeed, must rely on fund-raising and the award of grants. In parallel with this there is much planning to be done to decide on equipment requirements, prepare building specifications, obtain Diocesan and DNPA approval, negotiate terms, obtain building estimates etc etc.

We will keep this website up to date with developments as they arise.
